Eden Prairie High School teacher starts new business

As if being a full-time physics teacher, cross country ski coach and soccer coach at Eden Prairie High School weren’t enough, Doug Boonstra is adding yet another title to his list: small business owner.

Doug, along with his wife Susan, recently opened a master franchise of Anago Cleaning Systems. As master franchisees for the commercial cleaning company, the two have invested in a territory that covers 12 counties and more than 3 million people throughout the Twin Cities market. Their franchise, based in Edina, opened July 1.

Susan, a former teacher at Eden Lake Elementary in Eden Prairie, had spent several years as a stay-at-home mom with their three children. She was looking to try something new and bring in some additional revenue. With the kids all off at school, it seemed like a perfect time to pursue a new opportunity.

“I wanted to have that sense of being able to give back to the community,” Susan said.

Despite their background in teaching, Doug and Susan were not strangers to the business world. The couple owned a vending company in the past when their kids were young, but later sold the company. Susan has done some small network marketing and had always wanted to pursue her own business.

The timing was ideal to start up the business in the summer, while Doug was free from school and coaching. The duo, who previously lived in Richfield, spent all of June in training to take on their new roles as business owners. This master franchise is comprised of two components: recruiting and helping start unit franchises throughout the metro, and establishing contracts with businesses in need of cleaning services.

With an office centrally located in Edina, they are currently working on targeting the southwest metro, but hope to expand and grow along the way. So far, they have been focusing on advertising and getting the word out about their business, attending business expos and recruiting franchise owners and employees. It is a lot more than a business for the Boonstras – it’s a way to reach out and help others.

“Our goal is to help people get back to work,” Doug said. “We want to help people get into business working for themselves instead of working for someone else.”

Anago Cleaning Systems started in 1989 and began franchises in 1991. The business headquarters are located in Pompano Beach, Fla. The business has 30 master territories across the country and 2,400 unit franchises. It has been a record year for master franchises, with six new master territories added so far, according to Judy Walker, vice president of marketing for the company. Anago was also named the 10th fastest growing franchise by Entrepreneur Magazine.

Walker has no doubts that the Boonstras will carry on the legacy of success of the business.

“Susan is very unique as a master franchisee with a lot of education experience,” Walker said. “To do well in this business you need to have the energy to hit the ground running and a passion to be successful. They both embody this. The path to success is great for them. I am very excited for their future.”
