By Adam Povlitz, President and CEO of Anago Cleaning Systems
When I decided to come work at Anago Cleaning Systems, my father, David Povlitz, didn’t plop me down at a big new desk in a corner office and drill me with business advice. He insisted that if I were to have a leading role in the company he built, that I needed to know the company from the bottom up.
I spent time doing it all. I cleaned toilets. I was a telemarketer. I worked in HR, writing job descriptions for every job in the company. Dad didn’t make me do this because it was any form of “tough love” or humility. He wanted me to build relationships throughout the company, but also to be familiar and appreciate every job at Anago.
Every year when Labor Day rolls around, I find myself thankful for that experience. It grounded me, humbled me and made me a better leader. Not because any task was beneath me, but because I was stunned by the passion, dedication and flawless execution of these jobs by everyone in the system.
Years later, as President & CEO, I marvel at the ongoing excellence of everyone at Anago Cleaning Systems. Companies are only as good as their employees, and it’s no mistake that Anago is one of the largest commercial cleaning companies and top franchises internationally. The men and women of this company – from the headquarters to the Master Franchise owners to the employees of our more than 1,700 Unit Franchises – share the same values, the same passion and that same commitment to excellence.
There’s a popular meme that reminds people to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO – a nice lesson in treating everyone with dignity. As the CEO, literally, of franchised janitors and their cleaning crews, I couldn’t agree more. It’s our people that make us the best and they have my heartfelt gratitude. I hope the next time you run into the cleaning person at your workplace that you thank them for making your environment cleaner and healthier.
To every Anago employee, I say “thank you.” You make my job easy every day. You have my respect and appreciation. I look forward to growing this company with you and making the Anago name even more internationally respected than it already is.
